about

With the release of his new album Echoes Of Harlem, Australian trumpet player Mat Jodrell explores over one hundred years of Jazz in a single record, framed by his experience living in Harlem from 2010-2015 . The maturity and depth of his delivery of melody and improvisation, backed by one of the most experienced and well known trios in Jazz today, creates an album of considerable weight. Jodrell explained the inspiration of the album.. “Harlem has an energy that is addictive, relentless, unabashed and welcoming. I had always listened intently to music derived from this area, and dreamt one day to live there and soak up it’s atmosphere and history. It did not disappoint.”

Jodrell started out his career playing New Orleans music in Australia, but then went on to explore modern Jazz, playing with legends such as Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Miguel Zenon, Benny Golson and Jon Batiste to name a few, as well as teaching at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York.

The title track, Echoes Of Harlem, was composed by Duke Ellington, possibly the most famous composer to ever live and work in Harlem. This track features a C.G.Conn mute that is similar to the mutes used by Cootie Williams and Bubber Miley in the original Ellington recordings.

The original works presented here are “For My Folks”, written for his parents, “Resonance” and “Hankish”, written in tribute to the pianist Hank Jones. “Death Theme from The Untouchables” is a poignant composition by film composer Ennio Morricone and features a duo of Jodrell on flugelhorn and Frank Kimbrough on piano. “I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues” allows Jodrell to channel one of his main influences, Louis Armstrong. “The Peacocks” is a stunning ballad by Jimmy Rowles involving some fascinating harmonic complexities.

“The Bee Hive” and “Second Thoughts” are quite modern compositions by two of the most distinctive piano voices in Jazz, Harold Mabern and Mulgrew Miller. “The Bee Hive” features the incredible drumming of Lewis Nash.

The last of the songbook standards is “East Of The Sun (and West of the Moon)”, featuring the swinging and tasteful bass playing of Jay Anderson.
